Irene Sorrentino

December 21, 1925 — March 26, 2020

Sorrentino, Irene M. (nee Warren), a lifelong resident of Inwood, passed away peacefully in her 95th year in her home on March 26, 2020. She worked as a secretary at Trinity - St. John's Church in Hewlett, NY., serving the church community for 30 years. Irene was married in 1949 to the late Guy G. Sorrentino. Together, for many years, they ran Sorrentino Shipping, Inc., a freight forwarding company based in Manhattan, NY. Irene's faith was her foundation and strength and she lived her life accordingly. She was a pure and loving soul who graced many people with her smile and goodwill. She was a constant source of positivity, love, encouragement, and kindness, and always put her family first. She never missed an opportunity to mail a card or note to let people know they were in her thoughts. Irene was a generous and charitable person, willingly donating time and money to her church, to the Jimmy Carter Foundation and to Habitat for Humanity. Irene had a few notable quotes. When tipping (practically everyone, for everything), or when she would help a stranger, she would say with a smile, "Everyone has to live." When anyone in the family looked to her for advice she'd ultimately say, "Be good and kind and always do what's right". Irene is survived by her devoted son, Guy R. Sorrentino and loving daughter-in-law Terri Sorrentino. Irene is also survived by her beloved granddaughter Amanda (Sorrentino) Nish, with whom she spent many hours during Amanda's young and formidable years. Additionally, Irene is also survived by adoring step-grandchildren Pangea Kali Virga and Jacob Gottlieb, and great-grandson, Jack Nish. Irene was a loving sister of the late June Kenny (Bernie), Lillian Badgeley (Budd), and Robert Warren (Helen) and she is survived by many nieces and nephews across the country. Irene passed away as she lived her life, quietly, gracefully, and with dignity. The world has truly lost someone special, but Irene's goodness will live on through others, an enduring testament of her legacy. The family of Irene Sorrentino wishes to especially thank all of the fine people at Calvary Hospice, Dr. Andrew Grunwald, her friends Doug and Salome, and Cherry, Bernice, and Kayla - all of whom were a source of strength and support for Irene during her final days. Irene was cremated on March 30, 2020. A funeral service will be held at a later date and her remains will be interred in the Trinity - St. John's Churchyard cemetery in Hewlett, NY.
