It was a privilege to know Mr. Crawford (Pop Pop) even for a brief time.  He was a wonderful beloved man with an amazing smile who will be greatly missed. I offer my sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones who are left to mourn.  May God comfort and guide the family through this most difficult time.  You will be in my prayers.

I was an Import specialist, but I often worked with Junius. Everyone liked him, and appreciated his intelligence, humor, and calm demeanor. Everyone also respected him for his determination to do his job, tempered by an even-handed sense of fairness.  If every law enforcement official was like him, this country wouldn't be in the unholy mess we're in now.
I am particularly indebted to him. At my retirement party, which he attended, I thanked everyone for the kind things they said about all I had achieved, including two Commissioner's Citations for me and my team from the FDA, an Agency I didn't even work for. I said that nobody on this job accomplishes anything significant without the cooperation of others, and I thanked the attendees for all the help they had given me over the years. Outside of my team, which I worked with every day, all day, the person I had uppermost in my mind when I said this was Junius. I would have never gotten those awards, would never have even gotten those initiatives off the ground without his help in establishing practical, but effective procedures for protecting the food supply coming into JFK.
In fact, I first brought this problem to a Supervisory Inspector, who thought about it for about two seconds before advising me to speak to Junius. He was very helpful at this first conversation, but then when I had another issue a short time later, in accordance with protocol, I went to the Supervisor's office and spoke to a different supervisor, but the recommendation was the same. "Talk to Junius." Thereafter, I never wasted my time with going to the supervisors. I just went straight to Junius, and he never failed me, or his Oath of Office.
I'm writing all this because I want you, his family, to be proud of the work he did. Today you mention Homeland Security and people think of kids being put in cages and peaceful protesters being shoved into unmarked vans. That wasn't the agency I worked for, and it wasn't the agency he worked for. You have every reason to be proud of him.
He was liked, he was respected, and he will be missed most by the very best people he worked with, because they are the ones who can best appreciate how much he contributed to us all.
I hope these words provide you with some comfort. Please accept my most heartfelt condolences.

To a man who served our country with the utmost of dignity from beginning to end.  You will be missed dearly Junius.  Your service to the United States Customs Service was impeccable.  If I ever had a problem that needed to be solved that I couldn't solve it myself, there was one man that could solve it and that would be Senior Inspector Junius Crawford.  You will be dearly missed Junius by your family, your friends and this great country we live in.  May God Bless you always Junius.  Thank you for your service.  Rest In Peace my friend, your watch has now ended and we have it now
